The Early Years – Nurturing a Heart of Gold
Maria’s journey commenced in a lively and bustling household. She was one of five children, growing up under the care of a single mother who had a heart that welcomed anyone in need. Despite their modest means, Maria’s mother imparted invaluable lessons in selflessness and instilled in her the importance of a purpose greater than personal desires.
Even as a child, Maria displayed exceptional aptitude in her studies, consistently ranking at the pinnacle of her class. Her insatiable hunger for knowledge led her to develop a profound affection for reading, finding sanctuary within the pages of books at the local library. It was there that the sparks of her inquisitiveness truly ignited.
At the tender age of seven, Maria already possessed a repertoire of practical skills, including knotting, sewing and crochet. However, her entrepreneurial spirit truly came to life as she embarked on a mission to assist her mother. Together, they ventured into communities, selling foodstuffs and clothing door-to-door. These early experiences forged Maria’s understanding of the delicate art of selling, the skill of pinpointing the right customers, and the resilience to persevere even in the face of rejection.
Maria’s journey as an entrepreneur continued to evolve. In her formative years, she undertook a myriad of ventures, from baking cakes and muffins to generate funds for her own needs as a student, to ingeniously crafting pleated skirts for friends and neighbors. Her resourcefulness knew no bounds. Even while pursuing her studies in microcomputer technology, she engaged in a thriving side hustle. At the age of 20, she had already established a flourishing enterprise where she expertly refurbished computers, dabbled in graphic design, and offered computer servicing. Moreover, she had the foresight to acquire old computer parts, breathing new life into them and creating affordable computers for underserved communities. Her dedication made computers accessible to those who had been marginalized in the digital age.
These early entrepreneurial adventures laid the foundation for Maria’s future endeavors, imparting in her the essential skills of innovation, resourcefulness, and an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact. It was evident from her youth that she possessed the spirit of an entrepreneur, driven by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a heartfelt desire to uplift others.
The Blossoming Entrepreneur – A Beauty Business Journey
At 23, Maria’s formal entrepreneurial journey took flight when she became a business partner to her mentor, who operated a thriving beauty business. Starting from the ground up, Maria cleaned, managed teams, and eventually co-owned and managed the beauty parlour. Her passion for beauty and business acumen saw her not only excel in the industry but also mentor other young women, igniting their entrepreneurial spirits.
With her mentorship and unwavering determination, Maria soon embarked on a new chapter by opening her own beauty business. Her journey to success was a colorful tapestry woven with passion, creativity, and an unshakable belief in the power of women entrepreneurs. As her beauty business thrived, she didn’t stop there.
Maria’s entrepreneurial spirit knew no bounds. She went on to run an Extra Class Learning Center, where she dedicated herself to teaching children the wonders of science and mathematics. Her commitment to education extended beyond her beauty salon, where she nurtured the minds of future scientists and mathematicians, imparting not just knowledge but a love for learning.
In a testament to her versatility, Maria, in partnership with her husband, ventured into the construction industry. Together, they co-ran a construction business, displaying resilience and a flair for diversity in their entrepreneurial pursuits. From beauty to education and construction, Maria’s journey was a dynamic exploration of her passions and a testament to her ability to excel in various domains.
But her entrepreneurial journey didn’t stop there. With unwavering determination, Maria, along with two remarkable and equally resilient businesswomen, ventured into the beauty industry once more. This time, they opened a bigger beauty business, complete with a massage and beauty spa, children’s spa, hair salon, and slimming clinic. Their partnership was a testament to the unyielding spirit of women entrepreneurs, proving that even in the face of challenges, they could bounce back, level up, and create thriving businesses.
Rising from the Depths – The Power of Resilience
Life dealt Maria a sudden, unexpected blow when, after 12 years of marriage, she tragically lost her husband. This heart-wrenching loss brought with it a cascade of hardships that seemed insurmountable. Everything she had painstakingly built, from her home to her businesses, including a construction company she had co-owned with her late husband, crumbled before her eyes. Homelessness became an unwelcome reality, and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic added an extra layer of difficulty.
Amid these darkest hours, Maria unearthed a wellspring of resilience within herself. She discovered the profound truth that setbacks are often the catalysts for comebacks, and that every challenge, no matter how daunting, presents an opportunity to level up.
Today, Maria stands as a shining luminary in the realms of AI ethics and environmental education, a field she is deeply passionate about. She has cofounded a global AI Ethics organisation and founded My Zalu, an environmentally-focused awareness project that inspires, empowers, and educates children to become better stewards of our planet. My Zalu’s reach spans the globe, with a presence in over 25 countries and still expanding.
Maria’s remarkable journey has not only whisked her across continents, immersing her in diverse cultures and languages, but it has also reinforced her steadfast commitment to her mantra: “No one must be left behind.” She is a perpetual learner, embracing growth with open arms. Along her path, she has been fortunate to have wonderful mentors who have guided her. Despite her many achievements, Maria knows that challenges may still arise. However, her unwavering belief in the power and ability within each of us to bounce back and level up remains her guiding light.
